Kitonga Garden Resort is a breathtaking five-star resort and spa in the hills of Mbiuni, Machakos County.  You can hardly tell that this magnificent property took years of sacrifice and working tirelessly in a foreign land to put it up. Thanks to former Kenyan high school teacher David Kitonga who looks back at his yesteryears with a confident smile.

His judgment call and sacrifice paid off and he recently launched the resort flanked by political honchos in Eastern Kenya. Among them was former Kenyan Vice President and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Who is the Owner of Kitonga Garden Resort?

David Kitonga owns the luxurious Kitonga Garden Resort & Spa in Ukambani region. Kitonga started as a secondary school teacher for two decades before relocating to the US with his family.  He narrates a life of hardship with his 11 siblings but never gave up and eventually became a biology teacher.

His 20-year teaching career saw him teach at different schools in the country, Central High School in Eldoret City and Siani Girls in Narok. He loved his job so much that he ranked as senior biology examiner marking the subject’s paper one during the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

A streak of good luck would come knocking in 2009 when he won the D.V Lottery Green Card. He immigrated to America together with his family this same year to start a new life but he had a vision of what he wanted in the next decade. His first white-collar jobs in the US included working as a gas station attendant, a mason and a storekeeper despite his cosy teaching job back home.

However, his new chapter in life gave him a new challenge based on his interaction with different people in the US. That’s where the resort’s dream started. While he worked tirelessly in foreign land, he wanted to invest back home as his retirement plan. He evolved from a casual job to a certified healthcare giver in a nursing home while his wife worked as a nurse.

They expanded their healthcare-giving job with an agency which their son managed and this helped them raise funds to purchase 100 acres of land where Kitonga Garden Resort & Spa sits today.

How Kitonga Garden Resort Started

His son who is an electrical engineer and his daughter who did interior design worked on the resort’s design following the purchase of the land ascending atop a hill. It took a year to design the resort with a reputable architect who led the process for 12 months. Its positioning gives guests a 3600 view of the historic Yatta Plateau.

Thirty cottages make up the resort, each with a balcony overlooking the beautiful plateau in Eastern Kenya. Sunrises and sunsets are beautiful from the balcony, each with an aura of satisfaction and gratitude. The resort located one hour away from the capital, Nairobi, has prestigious rooms tastefully designed with opulence and relaxation in mind.

Each room located on the ground floor features an outdoor shower with luxurious décor. A penthouse within the resort offers privacy and exclusivity with beautiful views of Ukambani Hills and the Yatta Plateau.  Other facilities at the resort include the following:
