Africa may not always be the first continent that comes to mind when thinking of ideal places to live in, but it is slowly emerging as a top destination for those looking for a new home.

The continent has over 54 countries and boasts thriving high-tech cities, beautiful coastal properties, progressive enclaves, world-class universities and better infrastructure in the developed cities. On top of that, it is blessed with stunning natural beauty, which includes iconic landmarks, vast savannas and white sandy beaches.

But is Africa safe, especially for expats? Well, the answer to this question is yes it can be, depending on the country you choose to live in. In this article, we explore the safest African countries for expats, as ranked by the Global Peace Index (GPI).

On top of the list of the safest African countries for expats is Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean with a GPI score of 1.546. Its location is the main factor contributing to the nation’s safety, as it shares no borders with any other nation.

The island nation enjoys political stability and low crime rate, hence being an ideal destination for tourists and expats alike. Attractions in Mauritius include stunning beaches, lagoons, mountain hikes and reefs.

2. Botswana

With a GPI score of 1.762, Botswana has earned its reputation as one of the safest countries in Africa. Just like Mauritius, the stable political climate and low crime rate are the major contributors to safety in the South  African country.

While Sierra Leone is not one of the tourism giants in Africa, it boasts several attractions which expats can explore.

4. Ghana

Another country with relatively low crime rate and stable political situation, Ghana is among the safest African countries for expats. Since 1992, Ghana has had peaceful transfers of power between its two main political parties, which make the country safe even during elections, unlike other regions in the continent.

Apart from safety, another big draw to live in Ghana is the low cost of living which favours individuals who don’t want to get deep into their pockets. The amount you’ll spend on food, housing and transportation in Ghana is relatively low compared to other countries in Africa.
