Tourists visiting Uganda Exempted
Uganda has rolled out elaborate measures for tourist following the government’s latest move to ease travel restrictions.
Arriving passengers will now be allowed to proceed with their plans without being subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.
The Cabinet on Tuesday okayed a raft of COVID-19 measure for airlines as Entebbe International Airport reopens on Thursday.
In the new safety protocols, the onus of testing for COVID-19 for arriving passengers lies with the airlines, Ofwono Opondo, executive director of Uganda Media centre, said in a statement.
He added that all airlines must ensure compliance by having all passengers take a COVID-19 test 72 hours before arrival to Uganda
“Responsibility of ensuring that travellers are tested prior to travel, would rest with the airlines,” said Opondo.
“For travellers presenting with symptoms at the airport without a test result, a sample will be collected upon arrival and the individual asked to quarantine at their own cost until the result is returned,” he said.
Opondo added that Uganda’s Ministry of Health will offer guidance on self-quarantine for those who present coronavirus symptoms.
“They (passengers) would be given guidance on the recommended procedures of self-quarantine where needed and for infection prevention,” said Opondo.
“Testing for any of the recent travellers would be symptom-based in the event that they develop symptoms consistent with Covid-19,” he said.
Tourist will now be shuttled from the airport to their areas of sight-seeing – game parks among others – and thereafter, be driven to their hotels or camps.
Uganda took time to lift a ban on international flights due to the second wave of coronavirus which hit the country when President Yoweri Museveni eased COVID-19 restrictions in July.
