The Kenyan flower industry is one of the oldest and largest in Africa. Floriculture has steadily gained traction in the Kenyan culture over the years.
The growing love for flowers in Kenya has seen a string of flower businesses – offline and online shops – opened while the number of florists in the country also has increased. It is on this premise that Kenya is set to launch the first-ever Kenya Flower Festival (KeFFlo) 2019.
According to the Kenya Flower Council, Kenya is the third-largest producer of cut flowers in the world and the lead exporter of roses to the European market at a share of 38 per cent. Further, out of the 60 countries where Kenya’s flowers are sold, 50 percent have a ready market in Dutch auctions.
The flower industry has created direct and indirect employment to an estimated 500,000 people accounting for 1.06 percent of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), an attractive figure that has wooed both local and foreign investors into the flower industry.
Roses, carnations, alstroemeria, gypsophila, lilies eryngiums, arabicum, hypericum among others are grown in the main flower production areas of Lake Naivasha and other regions such as Nyandarua, Kitale, Mt. Kenya, Thika, Nakuru among others.
As such, the Kenya Flower Festival (KeFFlo), an initiative conceptualized by a PR and marketing agency-Bold Rose Communications, seeks to celebrate and bring together Kenya’s flower enthusiasts and inculcate a collective culture of using flowers in our homes as a show of empathy, happiness, love and gratitude.
KeFFlo 2019, Bloom in Bravery edition is themed around honouring those battling breast cancer as well as celebrating breast cancer survivors in October which is a breast cancer awareness month.
There will be an online contest where participants will design and decorate bras using flowers in the “Glam your floral bra” campaign geared towards showing support and love to breast cancer victims and survivors.
KeFFlo Gala night will thereafter be held on the eve of the festival on October 25 where “Glam your floral bra” winners together with the leading florists will be awarded. The main festival will then feature in Diana Hay Gardens at The Lord Errol, Runda on October 26.
