When you think of an authentic mountain experience, think of Usawa Wellness Centre right at the heart of Moshi, Tanzania. It gives you the other side of comfort backed by the fact that it’s decked right below Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. It sets the pace in Moshi; quiet, steady, and unhurried. The mountain looks down over the city, inviting you to slow down and take it all in.

Usawa runs by the same spirit, a haven for relaxation and rejuvenation in Tanzania.

Whether you’re going on safari, returning from adventure, or simply spending time in Moshi, there’s no better place to pause, breathe, and enjoy the calm beneath Africa’s highest peak than at Usawa.

What Makes Usawa Wellness Centre Special?

In Swahili, โ€˜usawaโ€™ means harmony, balance, and equality, a philosophy that nurtures the well-being of mind, body, and soul. True to its name, Usawa Wellness Centre brings that philosophy to life through fresh, wholesome food for the body and wellness experiences that restore the mind and spirit.

How Usawa Started in Moshi

“Usawa Wellness Centre is a woman-led sanctuary dedicated to enhancing your well-being. Our center offers a harmonious blend of fitness and yoga classes, paired with healthy eating and unique spa treatments, creating balance in your daily life,” explains the founder.

From the moment you step through the gate, you are enveloped in a sense of calm, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature and the gentle fragrance of indigenous flora. And in the kitchen, Usawa Cafe offers a delight for your palate, proudly fresh and authentic from the local farms, here every dish tells a story of the season.

“We specialize in healthy, locally sourced, and seasonal ingredients. Whether you’re enjoying a nourishing breakfast, a light lunch, or a freshly brewed coffee, our menu celebrates the flavors of the region and supports local farmers,” details Kartic, the manager and chef.

At Usawa, the chef and his team prepare each dish with care, creating a vibrant menu of wholesome meals, colourful vegetarian options, and seasonal favourites. Whether it’s a signature salad or a bowl of soup, a cup of freshly brewed coffee or a glass of energizing fresh juice from seasonal fruits, usawa Cafe guarantees a tasty yet nutritious option.

For lunch, try the balanced yin/yang salad made of mango, avocado and seasonal lettuce with your choice of dressing, or the roasted butternut with coconut soup. For breakfast, the Belgian waffles come with fresh fruit and honey, a mouth-watering way to start the day.

The Usawa Wellness Centre cafe leans heavily on sourdough too, from a Mediterranean veggie sandwich with hummus, grilled vegetables, and caramelized onion, to a homemade veggie burger, to pancakes and waffles finished with pineapple compote or mango jam. Even the pizzas are sourdough, made without yeast. Dairy and nut alternatives are available throughout for anyone with allergies or preferences.

Does Usawa Offer Guests an Indian Culinary Experience?

At Usawa, you get to enjoy a full Indian culinary delight courtesy of Kartic. The chef trained as a culinary specialist in Kolkata, India. He grew up on South Indian food and still cooks it the way he learned it there, from scratch, no shortcuts.

The menu opens with street food: Aloo Tikki Chaat, Pani Puri, and Dahi Puri, crisp hollow pastry stuffed with spiced potato and chickpeas and topped with sweet tamarind chutney. Alongside it are handmade vegetable samosas folded the traditional way, and a rotating line-up of Indian curries.

Which is the Most Popular Dish at Usawa Wellness?

The most popular dish at Usawa Wellness Centre is the Potato Masala Dosa. It’s served as a three-course meal that opens with:

  • Dahi Vada
  • Lentil dumplings soaked in sweet yoghurt and tamarind chutney, finished with coriander and a scatter of pomegranate

Next comes the dosa itself. It is batter made from rice and lentil mixed with fenugreek, left to soak overnight, then cooked on a hot pan brushed with ghee. It’s served with sambar, a South Indian stew of lentils, carrot, pumpkin and green peas. This dish also has butternut, tomato, and onion.

A chilli kick doesn’t hold back, sour, spicy, and sweet all at once, alongside a coconut chutney made with roasted chana, coriander, and green chilli. The meal closes with payasam, rice pudding cooked in fresh milk and coconut milk, sweetened with jaggery and dried fruit.

Noone describes the Usawa experience better than this customer who came in for Usawa’s first South Indian evening:

“This week Usawa opened on a high note with authentic South Indian cuisine, and I mean truly authentic. No shortcuts, no compromise. Kartick made his dosas fresh, by hand, the old way. That crispness between the teeth, the condiments alongside… those of us who know our South Indian food were simply nodding along in quiet happiness. I’m a regular visitor to India myself, and I can honestly say this is the real deal. The format is a set menu, starter, main and dessert, and it works beautifully. Everything was balanced, easy to digest, smooth on the palate.”

How Good is the Usawa Spa?

The ultra-modern, on-site spa carries a sweet tale of Usawa Wellness Centre. This spa is built around recovery. The infrared sauna and steam rooms help circulation, loosen tired muscles, and take the edge off stress. The sauna and steam room are good for your skin and entire respiration system. Further, if you just came off a hike or a workout, they’ll help you enjoy your sleep too.

There’s a full range of massages, from aromatherapy to deep tissue, matched to what you need on the day. Whether you get your massage from Asia, Deo, or Fina, you’ll walk out a whole new person. You can also add an ice bath to your steam and sauna package for a guaranteed refreshing experience. Ice baths speed up recovery, cut down on soreness, leaving you refreshed.

Usawa also offers reflexology, pressure applied to specific points on the feet and hands. It sounds small, but people leave calmer, less sore, and sleeping better. Once you have refreshed you deserve aome pampering; there’s a small nail salon, to take care of all your mani-pedi needs.

โ€œNone of this happens without the team behind it. It’s their hands, their attention, and their care that make a visit to Usawa feel less like a service and more like being looked after,โ€ the founder says.

Does the Wellness Centre Have a Shop?

Don’t leave empty-handed as Usawa Wellness Centre has a souvenir shop stocked with goods made by local women. You can purchase anything from chilli oils to kitenge bags and yoga straps, and even workout clothes from Elani. Most importantly, every purchase goes straight back to the entrepreneurs behind it, the local Moshi women.

Kitenge, in particular, runs through the whole space, on the walls and the cushions.

“Kitenge is a prominent feature throughout our space. We use this vibrant fabric to celebrate Tanzanian women and honor the rich, colorful heritage of Tanzania,” explains the founder.

“It’s more than just a fabric, it’s a cherished element of Tanzanian culture and daily life, embodying both tradition and personal expression,” she details.

That same principle runs through the rest of Usawa. According to the founder, whenever possible, the centre buys local, from the fabrics to the food they serve, keeping its footprint close to home and its impact close to the community that surrounds it, a true wellness haven in Moshi.
