Emirates flew for the first time to Lagos, Nigeria for the first time in about five months following the suspension of international flights in March due to coronavirus pandemic.

The airline which has resumed travel in 13 African destinations will also fly to Abuja later this week.

Emirates will fly four times each week to Lagos – on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday while daily flights to Abuja will kick off on September 9.

The airline has asked travellers to book their flights online through Emirates’ portal or through travel agents.

Emirates has stepped up its health and safety measures in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

All inbound and transit passengers arriving in Dubai, both UAE citizens and non-citizens will be required to undertake a PCR-based COVID-19 test before boarding the flight.

In that regard, each traveller is expected to produce a negative PCR test certificate otherwise he/she will not be allowed to arrive in Dubai or transit.

Between now and October 31, 2021, Emirates is also giving a free coronavirus cover to all passengers. The scheme covers medical costs, quarantine expenses and the cost of repatriation should one contract coronavirus when travelling via the airline.

However, for a traveller to qualify for this cover, they must be tested at an accredited clinic in Dubai or at the airport. Those travelling to Europe will also be required to take a COVID-19 test before leaving Dubai International Airport.

Besides Nigeria, Emirates will also fly to five African cities namely Dakar, Senegal, Abidjan, Lusaka and Conakry.

Emirates’ chief operating officer, Adel Al Redha said that he is optimistic the airline will resume its 143 destinations by next year’s summer.

Travellers have been advised to keep in tabs the requirements of entering their country of destination before boarding the flight.
