The Mursi tribe are found in the far southwest corner of Ethiopia, just north of the Kenyan border in the valley of River Omo. This is the same place where palaeontologists discovered some of the oldest remains on earth.

The Beauty of The Mursi Ladies

One of the stunning facts about the Mursi is that they are one of the last tribes in the whole world that still wear traditional clothing and accessories. Mursi women are famous for their wooden lip plates, which are considered a symbol of beauty and identity.

This custom of wearing a lip plate is also linked to a woman’s fertility and eligibility for marriage. When a Mursi girl is about 15 years, her lip is cut by a female member of the tribe and a small wooden stick is inserted. The process of stretching the lip then begins every night by inserting larger sticks. Afterwards, the young girl then begins wearing plates of various sizes and decoration.

According to the Mursi, the tribe which has beautiful ladies in Ethiopia, a woman who does not wear a lip plate is considered lazy. She therefore does not warrant a large bride price.

When Do The Mursi Ladies Wear Lip Plates?

With some lip plates having a diameter of up to 12 centimeters, you have to appreciate the bravery of these ladies. However, they do not wear the plates at all times. These plates are only worn at four main occasions – at special events such as wedding ceremonies, at dances, at donga duelling competitions and when serving food to men.

Unmarried girls, especially those that that have large labrets might wear lip plates at all time as long as they are in public. But as years go by, a woman is allowed to stop wearing her lip plate. In fact, she totally stops wearing it when he husband passes way.
