1. Unity Park

Starting our list of romantic places in Addis Ababa is Unity Park. Opened in 2019, Unity Park has a lot to be explored, from historical sites to natural and cultural sites. There are cafes and restaurants where you can refuel during the day as you check out the various attractions, which include the endemic black mane lion.

Unity Park is located within the National Grand Palace, which was established in 1887 and covers an area of 40 hectares. Within the palace are a myriad of buildings and plants that have been maintained since the days of Emperor Menelik II.

2. St. George’s Cathedral

In a country filled with so many religious sites, St. George’s Cathedral has been known to attract couples due to the fascinating beauty of its architecture and the rich history it boasts. This is where you’ll get to learn about Orthodox religion and way of life.

3. Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum

If you and your partner enjoy history then Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum should be on your bucket list. Established as a memorial to the victims of Red Terror, this museum is one of the places to explore in Addis Ababa if you want to learn about the fall of Emperor Haile Selassie and the horrors of life under Mengistu Haile Mariam’s Derg regime.

The museum, which was created by a surviving Mother who lost her sons during the Red Terror is funded by donations only. Entry is free and you will find excellent English-speaking guides who are ready to help in case you need assistance.

On the walls are photos and names of some of the estimated half a million people killed during Mengistu’s reign of terror. There are display cabinets filled with human belongings dug out of mass graves and you’ll also see some skulls and other bones belonging to real people. In one of the display cases is a watch which was given to a woman by her husband when he was led away by soldiers of the Derg.

4. Mercato Market

Mercato is worth seeing and the feeling is even better when you’re doing the exploration with your partner. The market is super busy and is considered Africa’s largest market for a reason – you can find nearly everything here. Going to this market just to browse and see what you can see is one of the best things couples can do in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

5. Entoto Park

Considering Entoto Park has been selected as one of the top destinations in the world, it’s no surprise that it ranks among romantic places in Addis Ababa. This adventure park is the first of its kind in Ethiopia and offers stunning views of the canyon and forests below. Entoto Park is perfect for nature lovers and there are plenty of activities to enjoy here, from hiking to ropes courses to zip lining.
