International World Tourism Day
Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, the International World Tourism Day which was marked on Sunday went down with the glitz and glamour of a post-coronavirus crisis.
The annual event was held at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa where thousands of Kenyans thronged to immerse themselves in the beauty of coming together once again.
The event was flagged off by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho who had a unique convey of about 400 cyclists who were attending the event while 200 of them were on their way to cycling from Mombasa to Nairobi.
Joho was accompanied by Likoni MP Mishi Mboko, Badi Twali (Jomvu) and Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki.
The International World Tourism Day also reminded Kenyans of what was the beauty of such an event before the coronavirus pandemic struck. There was a lot of music from different artists and a lot of street food.
While tourism stakeholders expressed optimism in the resumption of business and operations for the sector, they appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to lift COVID-19 restrictions.
Much to their pleasure, the President on Monday eased restrictions which are likely to favour the hospitality industry.
Bars which have remained closed for five months can now operate although under tough health and safety guidelines.
The dusk to dawn curfew will now start at 11 pm and end at 4 am.
