South Africa’s Monkeyland takes pride in being the world’s first free multi-primate species sanctuary with over 20 species of primates running wild.

This eco-tourist and child-friendly sanctuary is situated in The Crags, a short distance from Plettenberg Bay in South Africa’s Western Cape. Monkeyland Sanctuary was established in 1998 and has evolved over the years to become a part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA).

Some of the species here include squirrel, capuchin, howler, Vervet and Spider monkeys; hanuman and spectacled langur, saki, gibbon, ring-tailed and Black-and-white ruffed lemurs.

With 12 hectares of an indigenous forest, the primates thrive and enjoy their motherland to the best.

Monkeyland Sanctuary has about 500 monkeys and apes. The troops are easily seen within the enclosures of Monkeyland Forest. Baboons at the sanctuary are super friendly; they have extended their charm to horses in the sanctuary.

The 128-metre long canopy walk in the forest is the place where visitors get to interact with the primates. The suspended canopy walk, in a way, makes it not only exciting but stirs some adrenaline rush while on it as you watch the ecology of the whole forest unfold.

Besides the primates, Monkeyland Forest hosts the world’s shiest animal, Bush Baby. The forest boasts a restaurant with some of South Africa’s best dishes and a viewing deck.

Guided tours of the forest are provided on request. The tour guides are multi-lingual and can converse in English, German and French.
