Despite being Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka is often over-looked by many tourists who travel to Africa. And this is mainly because they are not aware of the numerous tourist attractions in Lusaka, which is also the largest city in Zambia.

Lusaka is a new emerging centre of tourism, with the museum, the villages and the local market areas being the places that depict the entire storyline. This sprawling city has enjoyed something of resurgence in recent years with a number of upmarket restaurants and bars, high-end hotels, and good links around the country.

Zambia’s capital may not have the reputation of an amazing tourist destination; however, you won’t regret visiting these spectacular attractions in Lusaka.

1. Lusaka National Park

The Lusaka National Park, which is one of the leading tourist attractions in Zambia, is a great escape into the wilds. The national park is a distance of 15 km from the city centre and houses a significant population of giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and eland, among other species.

Here, you also get the golden opportunity to spot the Big 5 and the rare white rhino. The habitat comprises forests, lakes, rivers and waterfalls and is a great destination for a day trip. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can go extreme and do abseiling or bungee jumping.

2. Chaminuka Game Reserve

If you thought you had seen it all at Lusaka National Park then you’re absolutely wrong. Spend your second day in Lusaka at Chaminuka Game Reserve, which is a paradise well-stocked with a variety of animals.

The private reserve sits on top of a hill overlooking Lake Chitoka and is home to 72 different species of Zambian mammals and reptiles. Cheetahs are the main attractions here but you’ll also see lions, elephants, ostriches and hyenas while exploring the landscape.

3. Lusaka National Museum 

If wildlife is not what brings you to Lusaka then no need to worry since there are other attractions such as Lusaka National Museum which got you covered. Here, you get the opportunity to see different arts and contemporary paintings with the sculpture that predicts Zambian history and culture.

4. Kalimba Reptile Park

Kalimba Reptile Park is a preservation area for viewing the giant water beast, the Nile crocodiles, indigenous snakes, tortoises and other reptiles. Besides touring to spot the reptiles, you get the opportunity to add more thrill and adventure by activities such as fishing and swimming.

5. Sunday Crafts Market 

If the weekend finds you in Lusaka, take a trip to the Sunday Crafts Market and explore their selection of hand-made souvenirs. There, you’ll find a good choice of jewellery, artworks, crafts and clothes which will leave you amazed with the creativity of the locals.
