The best of fishing escapades in Rwanda are found are felt in the magnificent Lake Ihema.

The lake is one of the 23 in Rwanda and is adjacent to the Akagera National Park dominated by vast savannahs, in the eastern part of Rwanda. Lake Ihema stands out as the largest lake at the Akagera National Park covering an area of 90 square kilometres with a depth of about 7 metres.

The eastern shores of the lake act as a border between Tanzania and Rwanda. The most stunning part of the lake is its rich biodiversity with over 550 species of birds, hippos, crocodiles and a variety of fish.

Shoebills and papyrus gonoleks dot every corner of the lake while endemic species such ibis, jacanas, herons, plovers, sandpipers, malachite kingfisher and hawks add to the beauty of the lake.

The highlight of any visit to the Akagera National Park is the boat rides at Lake Ihema. They are refreshing and relaxing as you get to enjoy the cool breeze blowing in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. From 8 am to 2 pm, boat riders come calling for a riveting experience in the crystal blue water of Lake Ihema.

The boat ride gives you an up and close opportunity in watching wild animals from Akagera National Park as they quench their thirst on the shores of the lake.

The trip in the blues waters gets better with a fishing expedition. If you have your own fishing gear, you are welcome to fish in this lake for a small fee of $20 paid to the authorities managing the park where the lake sits.
