Magical Kenya stirs the world with the discovery of peculiar-looking zonkey

Kenya is such a magical country when it comes to wildlife diversity.

Just recently a rare mammal, zonkey, was spotted in one of the parks in the country’s eastern part.

A rare young foal which has since been christened “zonkey” was spotted at Chyulu Hills National Park. The foal has a rather peculiar look.

With faded black stripes, the pattern barely covered the body. Upon close examination by caregivers at the Sheldrick Wildlife trust which rescues and rehabilitates animals, it was discovered that the foal was a hybrid of a donkey and a zebra.

“Working with wildlife, one learns to expect the unexpected,” Sheldrick Wildlife Trust said in a news release following the discovery. “Even the most seemingly straightforward story can eventually reveal its true stripes and end up surprising us all.”

The mother zebra reportedly strayed from Tsavo East National Park and integrated with the “community’s herds and cattle” which explains how the rare foal ended up being conceived.

A while later, the trust rescued the zebra and took it to Chyulu Hills National Park.

“The zonkey combines the sturdy body of its donkey sire and the striped legs of its zebra mother, which makes for a striking creature. While it should otherwise lead a normal life, zonkeys are mules, meaning that it will be unable to successfully breed once it reaches maturity,” Sheldrick Wildlife Trust added.
