Kenya yesterday became the first country in the world to be awarded the status of “Safer Tourism Resilience Seal” courtesy of Rebuilding Travel due to its efforts in bringing back travel after coronavirus pandemic.

The award was presented virtually to Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala. The virtual meeting had been attended by scores of global tourism heads under the Rebuilding Travel umbrella which comprises tourism ministers from the world all over, industry stakeholders, researchers and professional associations.

Bala in his speech said that the award speaks of Kenya’s relentless efforts in ensuring Kenya remains a safe destination for travel in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

“As a destination, we have put together health and safety measures that are aimed at ensuring the safe re-opening of the tourism sector to ensure that our citizens, travellers and workers are well protected,” Balala maintained.

“Kenya is the first country to be awarded the recommended status of the SAFER TOURISM RESILIENCE SEAL. It’s a great honour and a tremendous achievement,” he added.

With the Safer Travel Seal, he added, it will build confidence in travelling to Kenya.

“I can say confidently that we have rolled out successfully the protocols we put in place together with the Ministry of Health,” he said.

In June, the World Travel and Tourism Council gave Kenya the Safe Travel Stamp.

Balala’s ministry together with other stakeholders rolled out protocols to govern the industry during the pandemic.

The industry has now re-opened albeit operating within set protocols by the Tourism and Health ministries to ensure the safety of travellers.
