A day trip hiking at Mount Longonot is not only a sound plan but also a perfect way to spend a weekend for just $32.
Mount Longonot is located in the Rift Valley, Naivasha to be precise and it has so much to offer. It is 60km from Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The journey to Mount Longonot, an inactive volcano mountain is picturesque with clear sights of the great escarpment in the Rift Valley.
Mount Longonot is touted to have one of the best hiking and trekking experiences in Kenya due to its unique features such as lava canyons dominating the mountain across its lopes and a kilometre-long circular caldera around the mountain which stands 2776m above sea level. On your way up to the crater, the splendour of the national park beneath the mountain stands out with wild animals roaming the park’s crater floor characterized by a thick forest.
A complete hiking escapade at Mount Longonot takes approximately four hours from the point of entry. At least two hours are taken to ascend to the rim of the crater and another two hours to descend from the crater back to the gate. The way up is painfully exciting with steep and slippery mountain slopes and dusty terrains.
A good pair of hiking boots, sunscreen, water, light clothing and snacks are recommended for Mount Longonot day trip hiking tour.
