East Africa boasts of playing host to some of the best parks in the continent as well as beautiful mountains that scores travel from every corner of the world to come and see. It would be fair to say that it is the creme de la creme in the tourism industry.

With this said, let’s explore four unique tourist destination in this part of Africa.

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

This mountain has the highest peak in Africa at about 5,895 metres (19,341 feet). The most exciting thing about Mount Kilimanjaro is the hiking expedition through the rainforest and alpine meadows. Mount Kilimanjaro trekkers have a lot of fun as they beat odds to reach the peak, which is quite daunting and not for the faint-hearted. Kilimanjaro is not only Africa’s tallest peak but also the world’s tallest free-standing mountain.

While climbing Kilimanjaro, trekkers will experience five distinct ecological zones on their way to the top. Each zone gets colder and drier as the elevation increases. Plant and animal life also disappear

Rhino Reserve in Solio, Kenya

This Rhino Conservancy is situated in the slopes of the Aberdare ranges and Mt Kenya. Over the years, it has emerged the top rhino-seeing park with about 250 white and black rhinos.

Solio Ranch is recognised as one of the most successful private rhino breeding reserves in Kenya. The animals live in harmony with other wildlife, including the buffalo, zebra, giraffe and plains game. There are many travel operators offering tours to the Solio Ranch like Solio Ranch itself.

The main attraction is the rhino, but other game can also be found on the ranch.

Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda

This is the home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas. Nyungwe National Park is a dense rainforest in one of Rwanda’s most isolated southwest region. The mountain gorillas are fun to be with, in this part of Rwanda that enjoys a very high canopy. These chimps at Nyungwe forest have been and are being habituated which means that they are used to human beings.

This national park is also the largest tropical afro Montane rainforest east or central Africa. It receives over 2000mm of rain each year and its Rwanda’s largest water catchment area. The park home to 2/3rds of all Rwanda’s water.  The forest also feeds both the river Congo and the River Nile with water.

Maasai Mara/Serengeti (Kenya and Tanzania)

The wildebeest migration is a sight to behold, and an experience worth every effort is taken to plan this trip where over one million wildebeest cross over the crocodile-infested Mara River into Kenya’s Maasai Mara from Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Reserve in January. Towards June, the animals in their thousands make a trip back to Tanzania amid insurmountable risk at the Mara River where giant crocodiles have a feast of a lifetime.
