New UN report says officials should face criminal investigation and prosecution for their part in abuses against civilians.
The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has released a report accusing top government and military officials of committing serious human rights violations in the country.
The report alleges that state-sanctioned killings, rape, and sexual slavery have been widespread in South Sudan.
The commission conducted a year-long investigation across six states in South Sudan to compile the report.
The report states that none of those named in the report have faced any accountability for their crimes.
The commission chair, Yasmin Sooka, has said that impunity for serious crimes is a central driver of violence and misery faced by civilians in South Sudan.
The report identifies several top officials, including Joseph Monytuil, governor of Unity State, and Lieutenant General Thoi Chany Reat of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, as being responsible for state-sanctioned killings.
The report also names Gordon Koang, the county commissioner of Koch, who was accused of leading horrific attacks on civilians in neighbouring Leer County.
