UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Somalia on Monday to assess the humanitarian situation in the country.

Guterres met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other government officials to discuss the drought and the need for international assistance.

 The UN estimates that 6.8 million people in Somalia are in need of humanitarian assistance, including 2.9 million who are facing acute food insecurity.

Guterres called on the international community to provide more aid to Somalia, saying that "the world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Somali people."

The UN has appealed for $1.4 billion to provide humanitarian assistance to Somalia in 2022.

 Guterres also visited a camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Mogadishu.The camp is home to more than 10,000 people who have been displaced by the drought.

 He said that he was "deeply moved" by the stories he heard and that he was "committed to doing everything possible to help the Somali people."

 The UN has appealed for $1.4 billion to provide humanitarian assistance to Somalia in 2022. The international community must stand with Somalia in its hour of need.
