Mozambique's cyclone victims face hunger and disease

Cyclone Idai made landfall in Mozambique on March 14, 2019, as a Category 4 storm. The cyclone brought heavy rains and winds of up to 160 miles per hour.

 The cyclone caused widespread damage to infrastructure and crops.  More than 1,000 people were killed in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

Over 2 million people were displaced by the cyclone. The United Nations has warned that Mozambique is facing a humanitarian crisis.

Millions of people are in need of food, water, and shelter.The World Health Organization has warned of the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases.

The United Nations has appealed for $282 million in aid for Mozambique.The United States has pledged $10 million in aid.

The European Union has pledged €40 million in aid. The United Kingdom has pledged £12 million in aid.

The African Union has pledged $3 million in aid.The Red Cross has deployed teams to Mozambique to provide assistance.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has begun providing water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
