Kenya drops charges against opposition lawmakers over protests

Kenya's top prosecutor, Noordin Haji, has dropped charges against four opposition lawmakers who were arrested last month for leading protests against the country's electoral commission.

The charges were dropped on Monday, April 3, 2023, after the opposition leader, Raila Odinga, suspended his plans for further protests.

The four lawmakers are: Junet Mohamed, a member of parliament from Mombasa County Babu Owino, a member of parliament from Nairobi County Edwin Sifuna, the secretary-general of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Dennis Onyango, a member of parliament from Kisumu County

The lawmakers were arrested on March 25, 2023, for leading protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The protests were organized by the ODM party, which is led by Odinga. The ODM party was protesting the IEBC's decision to use the same electronic voting system that was used in the 2017 general election.

The ODM party claims that the system was rigged in favor of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was re-elected in 2017.

The IEBC has denied the allegations of rigging. The charges against the four lawmakers were dropped after Odinga met with President Kenyatta on Sunday, April 2, 2023.

Odinga and Kenyatta agreed to form a task force to investigate the IEBC.
