Information about the fast-spotted hyena

The largest and most frequent of Earth's four hyena species is the spotted.

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to these fascinating animals.

The spotted hyena's dark, bushy tail is 25-30cm long and its body can reach about 2m. Females weigh 82kg.

They are ginger-colored with black patterns. Their neck and shoulders have a lovely, short mane!

Spotted hyenas can kill wildebeest, antelope, zebras, and young hippos in groups.

These men maximise food. They can devour their victims with their super-strong jaws and teeth.

Male children often join a different clan, whereas female children stay in the same clan for life.
