FACTS ABOUT UGANDA CONSTITUTION

Uganda's current constitution was adopted on October 8, 1995, replacing the 1967 Constitution.

It was drafted by a constituent assembly consisting of 284 members, who were directly elected and appointed by President Yoweri Museveni.

The constitution is divided into 18 chapters and 288 articles, covering a wide range of topics such as the structure of government, human rights, citizenship, and the economy.

The constitution recognizes and protects the rights of all citizens, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.

The constitution provides for a multi-party political system, although the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement, has been in power since 1986.

The constitution establishes a presidential system of government, with the president as both the head of state and head of government.

The constitution provides for a bicameral parliament, consisting of the National Assembly (or lower house) and the Senate (or upper house).

The constitution mandates that the president is elected for a term of five years and can serve a maximum of two terms.
