The conflict in Ethiopia's Tigray region

The conflict began in November 2020, when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a military offensive against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the former ruling party of Tigray.

The TPLF had been accused of attacking Ethiopian army bases in Tigray.Abiy said the offensive was necessary to prevent a coup by the TPLF.

The TPLF has denied the coup allegations and said the offensive was an act of aggression. The conflict has displaced millions of people and caused a humanitarian crisis.

The United Nations has warned that millions of people in Tigray are at risk of starvation. The United States and other countries have imposed sanctions on Ethiopia and Eritrea, which has supported the Ethiopian government in the conflict.

The African Union has been trying to mediate a ceasefire, but the conflict has continued. In June 2021, the TPLF recaptured the Tigrayan capital, Mekelle.

The Ethiopian government has since launched a counteroffensive, and the conflict is now in a stalemate.
