154 elephants die mysteriously in Botswana’s northern region

Botswana grappling with death of 154 elephants in two months

In the last two months, Botswana has had to grapple with the mysterious loss of at least 154 elephants in the northwestern part of this Southern African nation.
Authorities have since ruled out poaching and poisoning as the cause of death.
According to the Regional Wildlife Coordinator Dimakatso Ntshebe, they are still waiting for lab results detailing the cause of death, Reuters reports.
Wildlife experts say that the carcasses did show any signs of poaching, poisoning or anthrax which at times sweeps through the wilderness of Botswana.
“We are still awaiting results on the exact cause of death,” Ntshebe said.
The death of the 154 elephants comes a while after a five-year ban on hunting of game was lifted by President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
Retired President Ian Khama had imposed the ban on game hunting before leaving power. The much-anticipated game hunting spree, however, failed to take off in April even after the ban was lifted due to coronavirus pandemic.
Botswana accounts for a third of Africa’s elephants due to proper management of its reserves.
